lol, that's just bad...shame grand/parents decide stuff like this even before the child is born. i've come across many people who already KNOW who they're getting married coz' they were engaged since birth - but then almost half those lot managed to marry someone else, coz' 1) sometime the relationship between the two families change or 2) perhaps the parents realise that their being unfair on their kids...or 3) like a few of my mates, who "run away" and get married to who they want to. hey maybe options one and two would happen for you and your brother- and it's not like ALL arranged marriages are disasters. wish ya' luck :)

Yeah but lady in orange do the people that run away have a successful marriage? Don't they get shunned by society and besides that the family they left would have no izzat left in front of people...

Aru- They live in the United States, and people don't get "shunned" for practicing their right of freedom here. The family should have thought about their "respect" before forcing something on their grown kids and deciding how a grown person should live his or her life. Also is it worth it for two people to live a terrible life with no joy at all for the next 50-70 yrs only so the parents who forced them to have a terrible life can avoid a few people talking about them

No no don't get me wrong here! I'm a million percent against these types of marriages. My friend is in this unfortunate reality. I try explaining to her that she needs to live her life the way she wants rather than having her family live for her but she doesn't understand. So I wanted to see other peoples take on this subject. Lolzzz maybe I can bring up what you both said to her for her to take a step and control her life!

Aru, no in most cases, my friends aren't happy with who they "ran away with" mainly because they did it on the spur-of-the-moment, just so they could break away from their family's expectations. that's why i said i had hoped the first two points i mentioned above would be the case for her. they may not get shunned from society in the west, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't probably be shunned from their own families...i personally would hate that. then again, i personally have no issues against arrange marriages- apart from those ones that the child is trapped in the house and married off against her own will- that is a FORCED MARRIAGE. Arrange marriages doesn't necessarily mean FORCED marriages; both girl and boy could agree to it if they wanted to. let's just hope that's what "Weddings" grandma had planned, and would actually take her grandchildrens preferences into consideration. :)

Arranged marriage, just like love marriage, will only work so long as both people can agree on common goals and work together in a mutually accepted fashion towards these goals. I allowed my paternal grandmother to arrange my marriage at a young age in hopes that it would bring my family together. It was horrible. I was miserable, my husband may he be at peace, did not have the same goals as me nor did our priorites match. This was a trial. I will never arrange my child. If he wishes me to introduce him, I'll consider it. If someone offers, I will let him have the option to date her or not. Marriage is so sacred, especially The innocent children it can bring. People change as they grow older to. I want my son to choose a partner he can be confidently in love with. After all, I will die someday and I don't want to leave him with my mess to clean up.
