That is a most inaccurate metaphor. The average is seven years for 'White people' in North America. The comparison with Desi marriages is especially unfortunate. I've known some couples who stayed genuinely close. However, Desi marriages on the whole are just like the ones that the Catholics of Quebec and elsewhere used to have, just a while back... they were essentially commercial and political arrangements, held together by massive pressures from society and the extended families. No matter what was going on in the home, there was no divorce, and precious little news ever leaked out about the couple. People were very proud, and wanted to save face at all costs, and at any rate to be spared the opprobium of church and community, if for example the baby-making slowed down or if any domestic unrest was allowed to show itself. Battered women and children kept quiet. People were ready to cut off their noses to spite their faces, rather than be shamed logoN ke saamne. *White* people, these were, of barely forty years ago. Think about it.
