Raksha Bandhan translates to 'bond of protection'. The sister ties a rakhi on the brother. This is to show that the brother will forever protect his sister. Then the brother gifts the sister and they usually feed each other sweets (ladoos, burfi, etc) A rakhi does not only have to be tied on a blood brother. I usually tie it on my cousins and my mum's brother. It can be tied on a friend too. Basically anyone you consider a brother and who will protect you always. However, the question of when rakhi started first is a hard one to answer. My mum has told me one story of when a rakhi was tied but I'm sure there are many older stories. This during the 15th Century when there were wars going on between the Mughals, Sultans and Rajputs. The widowed Rani of Chitoor was no able to defend her land from attack by Badhur Singh. She sent a rakhi to the Mughal Emperor Hayuman, who was not her real brother. Touched by the gesture, the abandoned an on going military operation to come and protect her. This story shows what the bond actually means and how it doesn't only have to be a blood brother who protects you. Now, rakhi to some is just another festival but those who understand the reason behind it are the ones who fully appreciate the bond. I mean the younger generation nowadays just do it for the sake of it or the money and the reason to dress up. Few actually understand the value and importance of the rakhi. I know it's long but hopefully now you have a better understanding of rakhi and why it is celebrated.

LOL... Ermm thanks but no one else explained! Plus it has to be long so someone who knows nothing about this tradition gets it. I don't want them to think it's a silly festival or just another festival.
