To me, he just proved his own horrific stupidity. If Indians prevented The youth's goal of learning crime...wow. Joke or not I am offended by it. And I'm glad it was ammended, yet I don't think the apology of the writer was sincere.

True, it was not that cleverly written a piece -a string of loosely related zingers- but as a sometime inhabitant of 'the other side', I can aver that he was saying out loud the very things the common folk are prudently muttering sotto voce. In his embarrassed and embarrassing way, Stein was stridently contrasting the work ethic and law-abiding ways of the current 'Indian' crowd with the degraded breed he grew up with. That was not a left-handed compliment to Indians, but was rather the author's grating and embittered reflection on the unworthy lot whom the newcomers have supplanted. i can identify with the Indian sense of dignity, but please, friends, fine-tune your antennae: it is worth noting here who is really being insulted by whom.

"If you research Mr. Stein and see his first immigration article in TIME magazine (pro-Mexican in Arizona), you probably would come to the conclusion that he's using the satire of the racial hate that the Indian community once faced in Edison to show what's happening to the Mexican community in Arizona. The point is, he's NOT making fun of us Indians--- he's making fun of racists who are doing the SAME EXACT THING to Mexicans in Arizona with the absurd old sterotypes (Arizonians calling their Mexican country damn poor and stopping those folks from comin... , etc. etc.). The difference is night and day when you see this perspective, is it not?" -Lamlight in response to Kal Penn

Stein's "sarcasm" is poorly versed if even there. Again, if it were satire his tongue would be in his cheek not forked towards his own ethnic community or the immagrants coming in. If that truly was his intent, then he should have versed it better in his apology.
